This is one of my favourite stories from years ago, and I'd really like it to be true, but unfortunately I don't know if it really is.
It involves a Canadian rider in the 70's testing a race spec Kawasaki H2( air cooled 750 two stroke triple) for the Formula 750 series.
During the test, every time the rider went along the back straight, he could feel the engine start to seize. Being a very experienced racer, he'd pull in the clutch and kill the engine. When he got back to the pits the Japanese mechanics would ask him what was wrong, so he told them it was about to seize and he'd saved it. The mechanics started the bike up and couldn't find anything wrong, so sent the rider off on another lap.
Again the bike started to seize along the back straight and the rider saved it. Back at the pits, the mechanics still couldn't find anything wrong, so sent the rider off again.
By this time the rider was getting a bit frustrated. He knew the Japanese didn't like being told they were wrong, but this was getting silly now. He was convinced the engine was about to seize, but couldn't convince them.
Down the back straight the engine started to seize again, so the rider decided he'd had enough and wanted to prove he was right. He pulled in the clutch and gave the engine a good right handful, it seized this time.
When he got back to the pits he told the mechanics it tried to seize again, but he didn't manage to save it. The mechanics went to strip the engine, but it was seized so tight, they had to cut through the con rods to remove the barrels.
I don't know what happened to the rider and team after that. |
